Making Camp Better Than It Was — U. Karoun Tcholakian

Fifteen picture frames are hung in the Rec Hall, and every single one shows the true beauty of AYF Camp Haiastan and the message camp sends: “Make it better than it was.” As I look through the pictures, I can see that camp is a cherished, important aspect in everyone’s lives. “Making it better than it was” is the mentality many of us wake up with to better the place we love.

There are many traditions at camp such as the talent show, dances, waterfront, olympics, free time, and camp store, but many other activities are new additions to improve the place we love, such as the camp news, legends night, and quiz bowl.

The countless opportunities AYF Camp Haiastan has to offer as a counselor are amazing and unimaginable because of the lessons I have learned from just one quote. The ways in which we make it better include learning how to interact with campers of varying personalities, abilities, and backgrounds. The different improvements we have made to the physical property of camp include the expanded cabin circle, new pool, the pavilion, expanded mess hall, and the function hall up top.

“Making it better” is also what we instill in the campers, which helps create an even better experience for them because they become invested in the experience of camp. For example, on opposite day, campers take the responsibility in leading the camp news or being active in Armenian School and answering questions. The campers are always involved in the activities they do, whether it be Armenian dance, practicing for song night, or even playing basketball. When they are given the opportunity to make it the best, they always do. Having this quote instilled in the campers at a young age results in the best campers and AYF ungers by spreading this quote to their chapters and hopefully encouraging them to give back to their communities.

Since 1951 this AYF Camp Haiastan has been a home to all that creates new families, everlasting friendships, fun-filled summers with laughter and happiness, and a way to preserve the Armenian heritage and culture. “Making it better than it was” is the motivation that will keep the flame of passion in my heart eternally.
